Islamic games without borders

In Istanbul, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) adopted a brand-new declaration. Number 51. Just enough for a football squad with a bench full of spare ayatollahs. Among the 33 items of global Islamic concern, item number 29 was dedicated to our very own Bosnia and Herzegovina. You know they love you when they squeeze you in between Azerbaijan and Jordan.

In that item, the Islamic world – meaning a planetary club that includes Pakistani clerics, Somali factions, and Saudi princesses – expressed “deep concern” over the “destructive policies of the Republika Srpska leadership.” So concerned, in fact, that they sent a piece of paper. Maybe a fax. Or, if they’re dead serious – an email.

Now imagine Dodik, sitting in Banja Luka with a shot of rakija in his hand, trembling. Not from alcohol, nor from the cold, but from fear of Istanbul’s 29th point. Because he’s been condemned by everyone from the Qatari emir to the Sudanese deputy minister whose office still runs on candles. The weight of that resolution hit like divine judgment: “You’ve exerted excessive pressure on the judiciary!” Terrifying. Tonight, surely, Milorad will pray. Repent. Maybe even offer a halal apology.

Naturally, Bosnia’s own Elmedin Konaković dazzled on the Islamic stage – a new Titoist prodigy in mosque edition – proudly stating that the SNSD’s policies were “harmful.” The audience, lips trembling behind niqabs, sighed in relief: “Elmo’s on it!”

Strangely enough, in that same Istanbul where Islamic leaders so passionately defended Bosnia, no one uttered a word about the actual Bosniaks in Bosnia. Discrimination against Sarajevo’s rabbi? Silence. The fact that Bosnia is the only country in Europe where LGBT rights are imposed by decree, yet a rabbi isn’t allowed public speech? Silence. What matters is that someone in the OIC remembered that court pressure in BiH undermines Dayton. As if the High Representative and the EU hadn’t already bulldozed Dayton into dust. But hey – better late than never.

Meanwhile, Iran and Israel are swapping atomic pleasantries, and the Islamic world is slowly dissolving into a game of war without borders. Only Bosnia remains eternal, peaceful, immortal in its non-aligned futility – stuck somewhere between the East, the West, and the final bullet point of the Istanbul Declaration.

And somewhere in Banja Luka, Milorad burps.
