SARAJEVO – The United States Embassy in Sarajevo and Ambassador Michael Murphy have responded to the accusations of SDA leader Bakir Izetbegović, stating that the party played an important role in the history of BiH, which they respect. However, they pointed out that its leader was unwilling to work with them on implementing reforms – combating corruption, improving the economic situation, and strengthening democracy.
“The United States is ready to work with politicians from the SDA, or any party, who are willing to implement reforms necessary for the improvement of the Euro-Atlantic future of the country, such as initiatives to combat corruption, improve the economic situation, and strengthen democracy in the country.
Bakir Izetbegović was unwilling to work with us on these vital issues,” the response from the US Embassy delivered to Sarajevo’s Avaz states. The Embassy noted that they had warned Izetbegović about corruption within his party’s circles and the consequences it would have.
“It is hard for us to believe that he did not know about corruption, especially given the trials for corruption involving high-ranking members of the SDA.
He either pretends not to know or, even worse, is worse than that. Neither is good for his party, its members, or for Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole,” the response from the American Embassy states.
They emphasize that they will act when they have solid evidence that an individual or a business entity is involved in corruption, undermining democratic institutions or processes in BiH, or violating the Dayton Peace Agreement.
“When appropriate, our actions will include imposing the sanctions available to us. Our goal is a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Bosnia and Herzegovina, where young people can find their future and happiness. Bosnia and Herzegovina has had and continues to have no stronger partner than the United States, and we want this country to succeed,” concluded the statement from the US Embassy.
Izetbegović had previously accused Ambassador Murphy of bringing embarrassment upon himself by making certain allegations about the SDA, claiming that they present a falsehood in BiH.
