U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that if a resolution to the war in Ukraine is not possible, the United States should abandon its current efforts and move on.
“If it’s not possible to end the war in Ukraine, we have to move on,” Rubio told reporters before departing Paris.
“This is not our war. We didn’t start it. The United States has been supporting Ukraine for three years, and we want this war to end — but it is not our war,” he said.
Rubio emphasized that President Donald Trump has been leading consistent, high-level efforts to bring the conflict to a close for 87 consecutive days. “We are now at the point where we need to assess whether peace is truly possible. That’s why we are engaging in talks with both sides,” he added.
“We must very quickly — within a matter of days — determine whether a peace agreement is realistically achievable in the short term. If not, I think we will simply move on,” Rubio said.
“We are not going to continue these efforts for weeks and months without end.”
The top U.S. diplomat stressed that Trump remains committed to pursuing peace, but the U.S. also has numerous other global priorities. “We have to decide quickly — and I’m talking about days — whether a deal is possible within the coming weeks. If it is, we’re in. If not, we’ll have to focus on other priorities,” Rubio concluded.
President Trump himself stated yesterday that he believes a ceasefire is “close” and that Moscow should soon respond to the latest U.S. proposal.
