VATICAN CITY – The Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, dismissed speculations about Pope Francis’ possible resignation, emphasizing that such discussions are “useless” and that the focus should remain on the Pope’s health and recovery.
In an interview for the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, published on February 22, Parolin stated:
“It all seems like useless speculation to me. Right now, we are focused on the Holy Father’s health, his recovery, and his return to the Vatican – these are the only important matters.”
“No Special Moves or Maneuvers”
When asked whether there was a particular “climate” of spreading false news in the Vatican, Parolin responded that he was unaware of any such manipulations and prefers to stay out of it.
“Honestly, I have to say that I don’t know if such maneuvers exist, and in any case, I try to stay out of them. However, I think it is completely normal for rumors to spread or for inappropriate comments to be made in such situations. This is certainly not the first time such things have happened. Still, I don’t see any special moves, and I haven’t heard of anything like that.”
Pope Recovering Well, No Need for Extra Visits
Cardinal Parolin, who recently returned from Burkina Faso, said he had offered to visit the Pope in the hospital if needed but emphasized that it was not necessary.
“So far, there has been no need. It is better for him to remain protected and have as few visitors as possible so he can rest and undergo his treatments more effectively. Thank God, the news coming from Gemelli Hospital is encouraging—he is recovering. They even sent him some office documents, which means he is doing well.”
By addressing these concerns, Parolin made it clear that there is no basis for speculation about Pope Francis’ resignation, and the primary focus remains on his health and ongoing service.
