**200 Million Euro Fine: EU Court Imposes Mega Penalty on Hungary**
The state has not implemented the current asylum system. Prime Minister Orbán describes the ruling as “unheard of and unacceptable.”
Hungary practices harsh pushbacks of asylum seekers and manages transit camps on the border with Serbia. According to the court, this is not compatible with the EU’s asylum system and intentionally violates the EU’s common policy.
But Orbán has not responded as desired. On the contrary, Hungary’s asylum law has been further tightened. In response, the EU Commission called for financial sanctions.
Now, the European Court of Justice has imposed massive sanctions against the country.
For ignoring the ruling, Hungary must pay a fine of 200 million euros. Additionally, for each day Hungary continues its current practices, it must pay a further fine of one million euros per day.
Viktor Orbán has already indicated on X that he does not plan to pay the fine or adjust his asylum policy. He writes that the ruling is “unheard of and unacceptable.” To the “Brussels bureaucrats,” illegal migrants are apparently “more important than their own European citizens.”
